Top Three Favorite Workouts For When You Really Don't Want To Exercise

September 30, 2018

Let’s face it. Some days, you just don’t want to work out. The day gets the best of you and you don’t have enough energy to pour in to a workout. It’s normal. Whenever I feel like skipping a workout, I ask myself, “do I need a rest day?” and if I truly know I need to move my body, I default to three of my favorite types of workouts. None of these are easy workouts, but they each serve a purpose in my life.

Yoga

Yoga is my favorite way to move my body without feeling guilty. I am able to push myself if I want to, but am also able to restore my strength through yummy stretches. Yoga is one of those activities that sneaks up on you. You think you’re having fun, enjoying yourself, just playing around and then you realize you’re actually getting stronger as you move through the practice. Sneaky little sneak.

There are several YouTube videos which offer a wide range of yoga classes to fit your needs. You can also check out local studios in your area. Being out in a community and moving with others can sometimes push me to test my limits in a workout, even when I’m tired.

Walking

This can be a really good workout. All you cardio junkies, I know you feel like you aren’t really working out if your heart rate isn’t soaring through the roof, but there are so many benefits to walking. It’s low impact so its gentle on the knees and it activates the oxidative system in the body which primarily utilizes fat as its energy source. If you follow NBM on instagram, you know that I love going for walks with my dog. It's a great way for me to unwind or set myself up for the day.

Quick, intense, HIIT workout

High intensity interval, or HIIT, workouts are short intervals of intense activity followed by a short interval of recovery.  I know this sounds like a pretty lofty goal, especially when you already don't feel like working out. But here's the thing: they’re quick, build strength and endurance, and leave you feeling energetic. If you’re short on time or really want to get in a workout but can’t get to a gym, try a HIIT workout. You can do it without equipment and in the privacy of your own home. It's guaranteed to get your heart pumping and break a sweat in no time.
