I don’t know about you, but I have a really hard time drinking water. Most days, I’ll only get in about half as much as I know my body needs. It’s so hard sometimes! If I’m being completely honest, I don’t like to be bothered by going to the bathroom. I have to stop what I’m doing, go to the bathroom, do my business and then come back to my work. It’s annoying. I get so focused on my work that I would rather postpone all bathroom activities to get my job done (man, do I sound like that lady who drove across the country in a diaper or what??). Anyway, if you are anything like me and have a hard time getting enough water, guess what? You are in luck. I have found a few ways to ensure I get more water in my life and I am sharing them with you.
Keep a water bottle on hand at all times
I have been doing this since I was old enough to need to carry a purse. Before I leave the house, I always grab my wallet, keys, phone, and water bottle filled with water. My goal is to finish the entire bottle before I get back home. If I am feeling extra sassy, I’ll make a goal to refill it and finish it again before I get home, depending on how long I stay out. Keeping a bottle near you at all times ensures you’ll reach for some H2O when you need a quick drink instead of grabbing a soda or not drinking water at all. Make it fun, too! Buy yourself a cute bottle or make it special somehow. I had a collection of stickers that I stuck on my water bottle. Now every time I use my bottle, I get to look at all my cool stickers.
First thing in the morning, you wake up, stumble to the bathroom, then stumble to the kitchen, turn on the coffee machine and get started on your morning. Keep a bottle in the bathroom and chug two cups first thing in the morning. I have a medication that I take every morning and keep it in the bathroom, because that is the first place I go when I get out of bed in the morning. I drink my two cups of water and already I am ¼ of the way to my water intake goal.
Hydrate before you caffeinate
Before you reach for that cup of coffee, make it your goal to hydrate first. Coffee tends to suppress the appetite so you are less likely to feel inclined to drink water once you’ve had your cup of joe. Plus, if you make sure to hydrate before you caffeinate, you’re bound to get in a some water!
Eat your water
Non-starchy vegetables count as water, too! Peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers - all examples of vegetables that have tons of water in them. Additionally, watermelon, oranges, lemons all have fluid in them, so you can either eat them or squeeze the liquid into your water.
Order water whenever possible and drink sodas sparingly
Whenever you get the chance, order a glass of water. Even if you don’t end up drinking it, just have it there in case you change your mind. You can still order that soda if you want, but just make sure to always order water. I do this and usually end up never getting the glass refilled because I don’t drink enough water to prompt them to refill my glass. But by the time I leave, I finish the glass of water. All is well!
